Technology Update

Don’t you hate it when people are depending on you and your computer breaks? Gr-r-r-r.

Insert reboots as appropritate. My desktop computer told me I had no disk space when I had plenty … Then it froze my screen …  Then it wouldn’t hook up to the internet … and on and on.

I can take a hint. I use Mozy to back everything up, so I had no fear of losing my data. But getting my data from Mozy is time consuming. Either I have to restore the files through the tiny internet spicket (and even with a cable modem and a high speed computer, it’s time consuming), or I have to wait for them to mail me a CD with all the files on it.

Now… I have a netbook. A cheap thing costing under $450 at Best Buy. Sweet. I copy all my data (between freezes and reboots) to the netbook, wipe the data drive clean and take it to the local shop where I bought it. Still under warranty… that was sweet. Hopefully they don’t have to flatten the drive with all my programs on it. I’d really rather not have to re-install everything.

In the meantime… I got myself a portable DVD drive, the LG GP08, a 1TB (terabyte) external hard drive, and a nice little 7-port USB hub.

While the desktop is in the shop, I’m using the monitor to work with the netbook, the speaker system, etc. So it feels almost just like the old system!

I’m thinking that this is what my future configuration will be. Netbooks that can be easily replaced; a couple of terabyte hard drives (hopefully there’s an easy way to make them into mirrors so if one goes bad, the other can be substituted), and it all still be cheaper than a desktop computer.

Don’t see much in the way of downsides on this plan.

Thought?
