I’ve just started leaning about something called the hype curve. This curve describes how the introduction of a new technology that makes a lot of buzz gets hyped up and then the aftermath.
As described by there are 5 phases:
- The Technology Trigger
- The Peak of Inflated Expectations
- The Trough of Disillusionment
- The Slope of Enlightenment
- The Plateau of Productivity
How you market what you’re marketing should include a consideration of where in this cycle you are. And you should also consider whether you are truly selling something that is “hypeful” or something that is useful.
Hopefully, I don’t need to tell you about the advantages of selling something truly useful.
