Taking the Hype Curve Into Account

I’ve just started leaning about something called the hype curve. This curve describes how the introduction of a new technology that makes a lot of buzz gets hyped up and then the aftermath.

As described by there are 5 phases:

  • The Technology Trigger
  • The Peak of Inflated Expectations
  • The Trough of Disillusionment
  • The Slope of Enlightenment
  • The Plateau of Productivity

How you market what you’re marketing should include a consideration of where in this cycle you are. And you should also consider whether you are truly selling something that is “hypeful” or something that is useful.

Hopefully, I don’t need to tell you about the advantages of selling something truly useful.
